5 egg-cellent Easter activities to do at home

It may feel as though your children have just gone back to school, but with Easter right around the corner it’s worth having a few fun activities planned to keep them occupied. This is a great time to introduce faith elements to your usual family pursuits, allowing discussions to flow naturally as you make, bake, play and create.

The Easter egg hunt

It wouldn’t be Easter without the classic egg hunt event. You may have to do it on a smaller scale this year because of Covid, but there’s no reason why it can’t be just as fun. If the weather is fine, pop the eggs outside. Give older children cryptic clues to help them find the eggs. Talk about how God created every bird and animal, and how eggs are part of his amazing creation.

Decorate some eggs

It can be really fun to hollow out a box of eggs and paint them (or you could cheat and buy some ready-to-paint synthetic eggs). Use glitter, tissue paper, ribbon and anything else you can think of to make them look beautiful. You could hang them from a plant or tree to at the end to display them in their full glory. Think about how each egg is different, just like us, but God loves us equally and sent his Son to die for every one of us.

The egg and spoon race

If you’re looking for an energetic activity, an egg and spoon race can be really fun. Hard boiled eggs are the least messy, but raw eggs can make it more fun! Get all the family involved and make sure no one cheats by keeping their thumb on the egg to hold it in place (you know who you are!). Discuss how a hatching egg brings new life, just as Jesus did when he died on the cross.

Make an Easter cake

Gather some eggs and other ingredients and enjoy baking an Easter cake together. There are plenty of recipes online. Ice and decorate it with mini eggs or an Easter-themed picture. Talk about the way all the ingredients blend together to make something completely new (and delicious!). In like manner, God places us in families and churches, then uses the mix of talents and personalities to achieve things we could never do alone.

Put together some Easter baskets

Why not make up a few Easter baskets to bless friends or neighbours with? You could pop in chocolate (or real) eggs, bunny ears, craft packs, puzzle books, chocolate nest cakes, bath toys, colouring pens, bunny socks, a card game, earphones, Easter tea towels or whatever else you can think of. Add a personalised note and Bible verse, then deliver your baskets in a socially distanced way. Chat about God’s great gift to us – Jesus – and how, by believing in him, we get to enjoy the gift of relationship with him on earth as well as the gift of eternal life in heaven.

John 3:16 says: “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”
