When asked about where he grew up in Missouri, he explained his childhood was similar to that of Huck Finn in Mark Twain’s novel Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.
Pitt said: “We had a lot of caves, fantastic caverns. And we grew up First Baptist, which is the cleaner, stricter, by-the-book Christianity.
“Then, when I was in high school, my folks jumped to a more charismatic movement, which got into speaking in tongues and raising your hands and some goofy-a** s***”.
While he gave a negative approach to his parent’s faith, Pitt gave some sort validation to speaking in tongues.
He said: “I know they believe it. I know they’re releasing something. God, we’re complicated.”
Pitt explained that he was taught “rock shows are of the devil” but going to rock concerts enabled him to understand Christian worship.
He said: “… I realized that the reverie and the joy and exuberance, even the aggression, I was feeling at the rock show was the same thing at the revival.”
Pitt also opened up about his alcohol issues which were revealed when his divorce from Angelina Jolie went public last year. The actor told GQ that he’s working on his sobriety.
He said: “I enjoy wine very, very much, but I just ran it to the ground. I had to step away for a minute.”
Pitt said he now substitutes alcohol with “cranberry juice and fizzy water.”
