Christianity – is it really so uncool?
Today’s contemporary society is obsessed with the idea of ‘cool’. But can you be cool and a ‘child of God’ or are the two mutually exclusive? Can the two ever meet? Is being a lover of Jesus ever cool?
Premier Praise Light up your life
Many of us have mothers, partners or influential women in our lives who we get to celebrate in a special way on Mother’s Day. But how do we honour them well?
Make time for her
One of the best ways to show you care is to give her your time. That might mean taking the time to send a card, make a call or drop round for a doorstep chat (if you’re not in a bubble with the mum in question). If you live with her, why not offer to do something practical, like take the kids for a long, muddy walk while she has a bath and reads a book? Or perhaps she’d prefer to get in on the muddy walk herself while you mow the lawn!
Buy a gift
Some mums love to receive a gift on Mother’s Day, but how do you know what to buy? Think about what she likes best – such as cosmetics, scarves, teapots, sports memorabilia or chocolate – and buy something along those lines. Petrol station flowers might not cut it! Alternatively, you could go completely off piste and buy something quirky and funny to put a smile on her face. Or something practical, like a TV or magazine subscription you know she’ll appreciate.
Make a gift
A home-made gift can be even more special. You could rustle something up in the kitchen, decorate a mug, record a piece of music or upcycle a piece of furniture. The options are endless! Whatever the end result, she’ll appreciate the thought and time you’ve put into your gift as well as the uniqueness of your offering.
Arrange a dinner date
You may not be able to see the mother you’re honouring due to Covid, but there’s no reason why you can’t still ‘hang out’. You could drop round some home-made food/have some takeaway delivered, then set up a video call so you can eat together. Make sure she has her favourite dish and don’t forget a spot of dessert and a nice drink. Get dressed up and encourage her to do the same. Then enjoy chatting the evening away as you eat, drink and be merry!
Think carefully about what you want to say
Perhaps you have a special message for the mum in your life. Whether you deliver it in person or in a card, think about what she means to you, then come up with a creative way to deliver your message. It doesn’t have to be deep and meaningful – fresh and funny may be more appropriate. Let her know how much you care, and how grateful you are for her presence in your life.
Finally, remember that there are many mothers out there who have no one to celebrate with, while others find this day difficult because they have lost, never met or become estranged from a mother. There will be also be those who have lost a child or have been unable to have children, which can make Mother’s day really tough. If you’re struggling at this time, reach out to someone you trust and share your sadness. If you know a mother/child who will be facing the day alone, why not do one of the above for them?
