Review: Hillsong Young & Free – III

This is the group’s first studio release and while there are some enjoyable and emotive moments, the opening songs lack the vibrancy we are accustomed to. Disappointingly, songs such as ‘Let go’, ‘Every little thing’ and ‘Just Jesus’ simply merge into one another.

But III is very much a mixed bag. We are given an absolute gem in the shape of the spine-tingling ‘Days gone by’; a beautiful and heartfelt piece full of folk-tinged vocals with a fabulous orchestral accompaniment. Similarly, ‘Heart of God’ is hugely enjoyable, with its mix of synth and powerful gospel undertones to create something uplifting.

III may not be an album to generate much excitement, but it is bursting with hope, optimism and sincerity. It demonstrates that the passion Hillsong Young & Free has for sharing the love of God with young adults is still very much at their core.
